It has been a little over a year since our family web
site has started and since that time, our family circle has grown by leaps and
bounds. I just entered our 1900th name into our family tree!! Our tree has
sprouted many new branches and it has been a joy for me to bring our lines, and lives, together.
It would be wonderful to learn more about all of you, so this page (and hopefully pages to follow) will be dedicated to just that. We will be
asking family members to share a bit about their lives, and allow us the
opportunity to get to know them better. Contact me if you would like to have your profile included in a future Family Close-up page!

Any family memories or stories to share?
I remember going to Grandma and Grandpa's on Sunday's for dinner. I remember
the endless food around the table. I also remember helping Grandma make her
ravioli in the basement. I can still see all the grapes in the backyard that
Grandpa always attended to. I also remember when Grandpa used to stick a
quarter in my hand when we were getting ready to leave. I remember Uncle Johnny
and Aunt Liz still lived there.
Then after everyone moved I can remember visiting Grandma in Phoenix. She
always wore her beanie when she had a head cold. I remember Liz's son's Greg
& Tommy putting a whoopy cushion underneath her when she sat down and then
she would laugh so hard her belly would move up and down. I think I was too
young to remember any stories about Italy. I only remember Liz talking about
some of the relatives who came to visit.
All our aunts, uncles & cousins would get together
to celebrate 4th of July picnics & parties at Uncle Nick & Aunt Joyce's
(Iuliano) home, family reunions and weekends spent at Aunt Rosalie and Uncle
Sal's home (Baratta).
I remember my grandparents very well...Theresa &
Angelo Iuliano. When I was 5 years old, we moved in and lived in the apartment
above their home in NJ so that my mom could help care for my grandmother. My
grandmother was always cooking something and singing while she did it. She had
a big washboard in the basement and a "press" to wring the water out of the
clothes. I still remember her doing that sometimes when I'm doing my own
family's laundry.
I remember my Grandpop used to love watching the soap
operas and Lawrence Welk TV shows. We always used to laugh because he was
always cursing in Italian. He had a big garden in the back yard that he was
always working in. He grew grapes in the backyard and we'd always pick and eat
them, if we weren't getting stung by a bee first. He also had a place in the
backyard that we loved to sit under...we called it "the shady place"...it was
like a huge arbor with lots of greenery & vines growing over it to shade you
from the sun. Also...they never took down the "outhouse" from the backyard.
They always told us how their kids had to go outside in the freezing cold to use
the bathroom. It scared me when I was really little. Also, he was a maniac
behind the wheel of a car, and everytime I drove with him I prayed because I
thought we were going to die! I remember my grandparents arguing most of the
time, but how devastated he was the day my Grandmother died. He died 4 days
later of a broken heart.
Grandpa did not speak of italymuch since he was young when he came to
the United States with his brothers. My grandmother had a
difficult life and often talked about missing Italy. One time I went with my grandfather to help
him clear land so he could build his retirement home in Connellsville, Pennsylvania.During the trip he asked me what I was going
to do for a living and he encouraged me to be a carpenter.Since I was only 15 years old, I told him
that I did not know what I wanted to do but finish school. He gave me a mini lecture telling me that by
15 that I should know what I wanted to do.It was funny but there have been times in my life that I had learned a
trade.
